What are pickets and when are they required to be used?
Pickets are an aluminum railing inside of the screen enclosure required by code when the pool deck is over 30” above the ground height.
If you don’t want to use pickets, a planter can be installed on the back side of the area in question provided there is room for it without encroaching on the set back.
What is a stem wall?
A stem wall is needed when the lot has a slope in it. If the lot slopes down in the rear, there will need to be a footer poured and a block “stem” wall built to hold back the fill dirt required to build the lot up so that the pool deck is level with the lanai (see illustration).
